Our work is
rooted in Kenya.

We pay school costs for girls in rural Kenya, and we are planning two schools of our own.

Where We Work

We serve rural communities where cost and distance keep many girls out of school.

We work alongside families, schools, and local leaders to choose the girls who need support most and help them stay in school.

Our programs are centered in Mua Hills, Machakos County, and run through community-based programs, partner schools, local women’s groups, and church networks. We plan to extend our work to Turkana County.

Our Programs Today

Mua Hills, Machakos County

Mua Hills is a community with deep personal meaning to our founding leadership, and it is where our first school is planned.

Working where we have long-standing relationships, local knowledge, and community trust lets us serve girls and families with care and accountability.

Where Our Vision Began

Turkana County

The vision for Girl Arise International began in Turkana County, in Kenya’s remote northwest, during the doctoral research of our Founder, Anne Muli, Ph.D.

The resilience of the girls she met there, and the barriers they faced in reaching school, inspired her to found this organization.

We do not run a program in Turkana yet. We plan to build our second school there and to extend our work as our capacity and partnerships grow.

Scholarships and School Support

Our scholarships cover tuition and fees, uniforms, books and supplies, transportation, and health and hygiene support.

This year we are supporting 120 girls at Mua Hills Primary School, Kaseve Primary, Kyemole Secondary School, St. Mary’s Girls Machakos, and Mumbuni Girls High School, all in Machakos County. Of these girls, 118 are still waiting for a sponsor. We select girls based on need, vulnerability, academic potential, and community recommendations.

A sponsorship costs $550 a year for primary day school (about $46 a month), $900 for secondary day school ($75 a month), or $1,500 for secondary boarding ($125 a month). You can give monthly or yearly, for at least one school year. We pay funds directly to schools and approved suppliers in Kenya, or through a registered Kenyan partner organization where required.

Since 2013, our work in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania has educated 5,000 girls and awarded 450 scholarships.

Build a School

In rural Kenya, the nearest school is often a long walk away, and many classrooms are crowded, worn, or unsafe. Distance and poor facilities are among the main reasons girls fall behind or leave school altogether.

We plan to build two schools, each for around 300 girls. The first will be in Mua Hills, Machakos County, and the second is planned for Turkana County. Each school will be owned by Girl Arise and run by a local school board and qualified Kenyan educators, under our governance and child-safeguarding standards.

We estimate each school will cost $350,000 to $550,000, and each classroom $25,000 to $50,000. Early gifts will fund land acquisition, architectural drawings, permits, and the first classroom block.

Land has been identified in Mua Hills and is under review. Our first milestone is to complete the land acquisition and architectural drawings, the foundation for Phase 1 construction. Fundraising for the school begins now, so no money has been raised for it yet. Nothing is built yet. If the project cannot proceed, we will redirect gifts given for it to scholarships and girls’ education programs, with notice to donors.

What Each School Is Planned to Include

  • About eight classrooms
  • Girls’ latrines and washing facilities
  • Clean water on site
  • Library and reading room
  • Staff room for teachers
  • Safe, fenced compound

Sponsor the School

  • Girls sharing a worn desk in a crumbling classroom
    The need: worn, crowded classrooms
  • A girl reading alone at a worn desk in an old classroom
The hope: a quiet place to learn

Uganda and Tanzania

Reaching further across East Africa.

  • Where We Have Worked

    Uganda

Our community-based work has reached girls in Uganda. As partnerships and resources grow, we plan to build ongoing programs there with local communities.

  • Where We Have Worked

    Tanzania

Our community-based work has also reached girls in Tanzania. We plan to grow it through partnerships with local schools, families, churches, and community leaders.
